I am a scientist, entrepreneur, writer and institution-builder working at the intersection of science, healthcare, innovation, capital and policy.

Over the last three decades, my work has spanned academic research, clinical diagnostics, venture creation, health innovation ecosystems and translational medicine. The thread connecting these activities is a single question: How do ideas become impact?

Whether working on diagnostics, innovation ecosystems, health sovereignty, venture creation or writing, I am interested in the processes that transform knowledge into better decisions, stronger institutions and better lives.

I write to organise ideas, mostly about Diagnostics Sovereignty, Precision Diagnostics, and, more broadly, about Systems and Futures. A first nonfiction book on founding in precision diagnostics, a second in progress on the Gulf’s sovereign health infrastructure challenge. Separately, under the pen name J.P. Leal, I write fiction. 

This website brings together those explorations across five interconnected domains: diagnostic innovation, health systems and sovereignty, venture creation, writing and ideas, and fiction and creative work.

I operate between Lisbon, Barcelona and Doha.
