Scientist, entrepreneur, writer and institution-builder.

José Pereira Leal

I work at the intersection of science, healthcare, innovation, capital and policy.

Over the last three decades, my work has spanned academic research, clinical diagnostics, venture creation, health-innovation ecosystems and translational medicine. Throughout, I have been particularly interested in how scientific knowledge becomes real-world impact: how it moves beyond the laboratory into useful tools, viable companies, stronger institutions and better clinical practice.

Within precision medicine, I have chosen to focus on diagnostics. I believe we need better tools: diagnostics that learn from the past, assess the present and inform us about possible futures.

The ambition is larger than better tests: to help medicine move from a science of disease towards a science of health.

Ideas

Four areas of focus

My work and writing currently focus on four areas.

Precision Diagnostics & Health

How medicine can move from detecting disease to understanding and preserving health by connecting biological history, present measurement and possible future trajectories.

Innovation & Translation

How promising science becomes an evidence-backed product or venture that survives contact with clinical practice, regulation, markets and scale.

Diagnostics Sovereignty

How countries and regions can preserve the diagnostic capabilities their health systems depend on, in normal times and in crises.

Systems & Futures

How technology can build better futures, create abundance from unlikely places and make human lives better.

Selected work

Current and recent work across diagnostics development, institutional capability and writing.

Europe and the Gulf

Working across disciplines, institutions and geographies.

I work selectively with people and organisations confronting consequential questions in diagnostics, precision medicine, innovation and health infrastructure.
